Anna Sten Dot Screen
Pentagram Architects, 2007

When asked to enliven a polycarbonate screen at Pentagram’s New York office, I created this pixelated image of Anna Sten, the “Russian Garbo,” using standard Photoshop commands. Designed in a few days and installed in an evening, the piece was created using standard office laser labels.

Various sizes and spacings of dots were tested in order to control the overall opacity and legibility of the image. 2 1/2” diameter dots in black, white, and four shades of gray were placed 3” on center. Up close, the image disappears into an abstract landscape of dots, but from further away the image is understood as a face.
